YOU may find this hard to believe but men are less truthful than women.
They are prepared to stretch the facts or even tell an outright lie far more often than their better halves, researchers found.
And
their reasons hardly do them credit. While women will avoid being
honest to save someone’s feelings, men tend to fib to save money or win
an argument.
Men are also more likely to be
deceitful to get something they want or to make themselves sound more
interesting or better than they really are.
On
occasion it is a form of politeness. Men will lie to get someone else
out of trouble, say “I’m fine” when they are actually unhappy, and
pretend to like an unwanted gift.
Almost half of adults admit they have been caught out when not telling the truth
The average man
fibs, or at least avoids having to tell the truth, four times a week.
But women stretch the truth just three times a week, financial
comparison site PayingTooMuch.com found, after questioning 2,000 people.
We fib about how much alcohol we have had to drink and about whether or not we have been smoking.
We make up stories about where we have been if we are late. We claim we have posted an item, like a cheque, when we haven’t.
And more seriously we sometimes lie on a CV or in a job interview.
Almost
half of adults admit they have been caught out when not telling the
truth – usually by their partner, parents or their boss.
A spokesman for
PayingTooMuch.com said: “I’m sure almost everyone is guilty of
stretching the truth once in a while. White lies or fibs are harmless
and will rarely have major consequences other than perhaps a little
embarrassment.
“But there are some things you
should always be honest about. Lying on your CV or in a job interview
could result in you losing your job if the truth is discovered.”
Despite
the many things we admit to lying about, six in 10 of those questioned
said they consider themselves to be “very” honest” with another four in
10 saying they usually tell the truth.
Whether or not those questioned were fibbing at the time is another matter.
